Geek With Laptop Forum

Terms of use

These terms set out the rules for using the Geek With Laptop Forum at forum.geekwithlaptop.com. By reading or posting on the forum, you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the forum.

Using the forum

You may read the forum freely. To post, you need an account and a working email address. You are responsible for keeping access to that email account secure, because it is how you sign in. You must be old enough to enter into these terms where you live, and in any case at least 13 years old.

Use the forum for its purpose, which is laptop questions and answers. Do not use it to break the law, to disrupt the service, to scrape it at a rate that harms other users, or to try to get around its limits and protections. The posting guidelines form part of these terms.

What you agree to when you post

You are responsible for what you post. When you post, you confirm that you have the right to share it, that it does not break the law, and that it follows the posting guidelines. Do not post other people's private information, work you do not have permission to share, or anything designed to deceive, harass or harm.

Licence to your content

You keep ownership of what you write. By posting, you give the forum a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, display, reproduce and distribute your post as part of the forum, including in search results, feeds, archives and quotations that credit the thread. The licence lets us show your post to other readers and keep it available. It does not let anyone claim to have written it. You can delete your own posts, and doing so ends the licence for them, except for copies held in backups until those expire.

Repair advice comes with no warranty

Answers on the forum are general information from staff and from other members. They are not professional repair service, and they are not a guarantee that a fix will work on your machine. Laptops differ by model and year, and software changes. An answer that worked on one machine may not suit yours.

Follow the manufacturer's guidance for your model, including its service manual and warranty terms. Opening a laptop, replacing a part or changing firmware may void the warranty, and a wrong step can damage the machine or lose data. Back up your files before you try anything that could affect them.

You are responsible for any work you do on your own device. Where a task involves a battery or mains power, treat the safety notes in the guidelines as a minimum, and use a qualified technician when you are unsure. To the extent the law allows, the forum, its staff and its members are not liable for loss or damage that results from following advice given here.

Moderation

We may edit, move, hide or remove content, and suspend or close accounts, when content or behaviour breaks these terms or the guidelines. We try to explain what we have done and to hear an appeal, but we may act without notice when a post puts someone at risk or breaks the law. We may also remove posts that are out of date or unsafe, even where they break no other rule.

Posts may link to other websites, including manufacturer pages and the Geek With Laptop reference site. We do not control other sites and are not responsible for their content. A link is not an endorsement of everything on the page it leads to.

The service as it stands

The forum is provided as it is. We work to keep it running and accurate, but we do not promise that it will always be available, or that every post is correct or current. We may change features, change sections, or close the forum, and where we can, we will say so in advance.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. When we do, we will change the date at the top of this page. If a change matters to how you use the forum, we will say so clearly. By continuing to use the forum after a change, you accept the updated terms.

Contact

Questions about these terms can be sent to hello@geekwithlaptop.com. See the contact page for what to include.
