Posting guidelines
These guidelines exist so that a person arriving from a search engine finds a clear question, a clear answer and enough detail to judge whether it fits their own laptop. They are short on purpose. When something is not covered here, ask yourself whether the post helps the next reader.
Asking a question
Put the real question in the title. "Why does my laptop fan spin up when it is idle?" is better than "Help with laptop". In the body, give us the details we would otherwise have to ask for.
- The exact model. The full name from the lid, the underside label or the system settings, not just the brand. "Dell laptop" cannot be answered. A model name with a year can.
- The operating system and version. Windows 11 or 10 and the version number, macOS and its release name, ChromeOS, or the Linux distribution. Menu paths change between versions, so this matters.
- What you tried. List the steps you have already taken and what happened after each. It saves everyone from repeating them.
- What changed. An update, a spill, a drop, a new charger or a new program just before the fault started is often the clue.
- What you want. A fix, a diagnosis, a decision on whether to repair or replace, or a recommendation within a budget you describe in words.
Search first. Many questions about batteries, fans and updates already have a thread, and replying there keeps the evidence together. One problem per thread, please. If you have three faults, three threads make three searchable answers.
Writing an answer
Answer the question in the first two sentences, then explain. Readers skim, and the opening of an answer is often what search engines quote. Name the setting, the menu path or the part. If the answer depends on the model or the operating system version, say which one you are talking about, and say when you are not sure it applies elsewhere.
If you are sharing your own experience, say so and say what it covered: "on my two year old machine under Windows 11". Experience is welcome. It just should not be presented as a specification. Link the manufacturer page or service manual where you can.
Off topic
The following are not allowed on the forum, whatever the context.
- Piracy. No requests for, or links to, pirated software, cracked installers, or illegal copies of operating systems and drivers.
- Bypassing activation or security. No help circumventing licence activation, device locks, firmware passwords on machines you do not own, or school and employer management controls. If you have lost access to your own machine, say so, and we will point you to the manufacturer's recovery route.
- Selling. No sales, auctions, referral links, or posts whose main purpose is to advertise a product or a repair business. Mentioning a shop or a tool you actually used is fine. Repeating it in every thread is not.
- Personal information. No serial numbers with names, home addresses, or anything that identifies a private person.
- Harassment. Disagree with the answer, not the person who wrote it.
Safety rules
Some advice is simply not given here. If a battery is swollen, bulging, hot or leaking, the answer is always the same: stop using it, unplug the machine, and take it to a recycling point or a qualified technician. Do not post instructions for pressing, piercing or heating a cell. Do not post instructions that involve opening a charger or working inside a laptop that is connected to mains power. Unplug and shut down before any internal work, and follow the manufacturer's service guidance for your model. Posts that break these rules are removed.
Moderation
Moderators may edit, move, hide or remove posts that break these guidelines. We try to explain removals and to leave a note when we move or edit a post, but we may act first and explain afterwards when a post puts someone at risk. Repeated breaches can lead to a suspended account. If you think a decision was wrong, email the forum team through the contact page and tell us which post you mean.
Links
Links to manufacturer pages, standards and documentation are welcome. Links from new accounts may be held back until the account has a few approved posts. This keeps spam off the page without stopping anyone from citing a source.
