About the Geek With Laptop Forum

The Geek With Laptop Forum is a question and answer community for people who own, buy and look after laptops. Someone whose battery drains overnight. Someone choosing between two machines with a deadline. Someone whose fan has started to sound like a hairdryer, or whose Chromebook has just reached the end of its updates. You ask a specific question, and you get a specific answer that names the setting, the port or the part.

It sits alongside the laptop reference site at geekwithlaptop.com, which carries the how-to guides, care advice and buying guides. The reference site explains the general case. The forum is where your particular machine gets looked at.

A note on ownership

Geek With Laptop began in 2008 as a one-author blog. It was relaunched in 2026 under new editorial ownership. The current team is not the original author and does not speak for him or claim his work as ours. Where an old article is kept for the record, it is presented as an archive piece and not as something the current editors wrote. The forum is new and has no history before 2026.

What we cover

There are eleven sections. Ten are for questions and one is for conversation.

  • Buying advice. Which laptop suits a budget and a job, with the trade-offs stated plainly.
  • Battery and charging. Short battery life, charging limits, chargers, and the difference between normal wear and a fault.
  • Overheating and fans. Heat, noise and throttling, and how to tell dust from a failing part.
  • Upgrades and performance. Adding RAM or storage, and speeding up a slow machine before spending anything.
  • Windows laptops. Updates, drivers, sleep problems, recovery and reinstalls.
  • MacBooks. Apple silicon, battery health, macOS updates, storage and repairs.
  • Chromebooks and Linux. Update expiry, Linux on Chromebooks and old laptops.
  • Screens, keyboards and trackpads. Dead pixels, flicker, sticky keys, failing trackpads and loose hinges.
  • Ports, Wi-Fi and docks. Wireless drops, Bluetooth, USB-C and Thunderbolt, external monitors.
  • Repairs and care. Cleaning, spills, drops, warranty claims and repair shops.
  • Setups and show and tell. An open discussion section for desks, travel kits and long-term ownership notes.

Who answers

Early answers are written by the forum staff. Marcus Hale is the Editor of Geek With Laptop and writes most of the buying and how-to answers. Ines Calder is the Hardware and repairs editor and writes the answers on batteries, thermals, upgrades and repairs. Every staff post carries a visible Staff label beside the name, so you can always tell when you are reading the team and not another member. As members join, their answers appear without the label, and the best answer in a thread is chosen on its merits, not on who wrote it.

How answers handle sources

A claim about a specification, a menu path or a safety limit should come from something you can check. Staff answers name the manufacturer support page, service manual or standards document they rely on, and say so when the source is a vendor's own marketing. Where we are describing our own testing, we say which machine and which software version we used.

Laptops differ more than people expect. A fix for one model may not apply to the next year's model with the same name. Answers state the model, the operating system and its version wherever they matter, and say plainly when something may not apply to yours. If you are not sure whether an answer fits your machine, reply with your exact model and ask.

Safety comes first

Some questions are not really about performance. A swollen or bulging battery is a fire risk. Stop using the laptop, unplug it, do not press on the case, and take it to a battery recycling point or a qualified technician. We will not walk anyone through puncturing, pressing or heating a swollen cell. The same applies to anything involving mains power: never open a charger, never work inside a laptop that is plugged in, and unplug and power down before any internal work. Staff will edit or remove advice that puts someone at risk.

Corrections

If an answer is wrong or out of date, tell us. When we correct a staff answer, we add a dated note in the thread saying what changed and why, so nobody has to guess what was edited. Software moves quickly, and a menu path that was right last year may have moved, so staff answers carry the date they were last checked. You can reach the team through the contact page.
