For everyday use, 16 GB is the comfortable target in 2026, and 8 GB is workable for light use on a lean system. Go to 32 GB if you edit video, run virtual machines or keep many heavy apps open. Check whether the RAM can be upgraded later, because on many thin laptops it is soldered to the board.

## What RAM does

RAM is the short-term workspace your laptop uses for open apps and files. When it fills, the system moves data to the storage drive, which is slower, and the laptop starts to feel sluggish. Adding RAM does not make a processor faster, but it stops the slowdown that comes from running out. The [thread on a suddenly slow laptop](/thread/why-is-my-laptop-suddenly-so-slow/) covers other causes of that feeling.

## What the makers say

Microsoft's [Windows 11 requirements](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/whats-new/windows-11-requirements) list 4 GB or more of memory as the minimum to install or upgrade to Windows 11. That is a floor for the operating system to run, not a recommendation for a pleasant day of work. Windows 11 also lists feature-specific requirements, such as certain graphics and storage needs for gaming features, so the minimum is only the beginning.

Apple's approach differs. Its [Activity Monitor guide](https://support.apple.com/guide/activity-monitor/view-memory-usage-actmntr1004/mac) explains that memory pressure is a graph of how efficiently memory is serving your processing needs, determined by free memory, swap rate, wired memory and file cached memory. It also says that when a Mac approaches its maximum memory, inactive apps are compressed to make more memory available. In other words, the number of gigabytes alone does not tell you whether you have enough. What matters is whether the system is under pressure for your own mix of apps.

## A practical guide by use

These are working rules from editors' experience, not figures from a standard. Your own mix of apps decides the right number.

| Use | A sensible starting point | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Web, email, documents, streaming | 8 GB, 16 GB for comfort | Browsers use a lot of memory per tab. 8 GB is fine for light users |
| Schoolwork, remote meetings, many tabs | 16 GB | Video calls plus a browser plus a document app adds up |
| Photo editing, light video, coding | 16 to 32 GB | Larger files and editors benefit from more |
| Heavy video, 3D, virtual machines, big datasets | 32 GB or more | Check the application's own recommendation |
| Gaming | 16 GB, 32 GB for demanding titles | The game's listed requirements decide this |

## How to check how much you use now

**Windows:** open Task Manager (Ctrl, Shift, Esc), click Performance, then Memory. Do your normal work for a day, then look at how much is in use. If you are regularly near the top, you need more or lighter software.

**macOS:** open Activity Monitor, click Memory, and watch the Memory Pressure graph at the bottom. Green is healthy. If it stays yellow or red while you work, and Swap Used keeps growing, the Mac is short of memory. On a Mac with unified memory, the amount cannot be changed later.

**ChromeOS:** press Search and Escape to open Task Manager and read the memory column. Chromebooks can be fine with less memory than a Windows laptop because ChromeOS is lighter, but heavy tab use still counts.

## Can you add RAM later

This matters as much as the amount.

1. **Soldered RAM.** Many thin laptops and all Apple silicon Macs have memory fixed to the board. You cannot add more, so buy the amount you will want in three or four years.
2. **Slots.** Some laptops have one or two SODIMM slots, and you can replace modules. Check your model's service manual.
3. **Mixed.** Some have part of the memory soldered and one slot for expansion.

The [thread on upgrading RAM or SSD](/thread/can-i-upgrade-the-ram-or-ssd-in-my-laptop/) explains how to find out which you have.

## Two things people overlook

- **Integrated graphics share RAM.** On laptops without a separate graphics chip, part of the memory goes to the screen output, so the usable amount is a little lower than the label.
- **Speed matters less than amount.** For general use, extra capacity does more than slightly faster memory. If a laptop is advertised with two memory configurations, take the larger first.

A follow-up on 8 GB: it is not unusable, but it leaves little room. If you are buying a laptop with soldered memory, treat 8 GB as the case where you will notice limits in two or three years, and 16 GB as the case where you will probably not. If you already own an 8 GB machine that feels slow, check memory use in Task Manager or Activity Monitor before spending anything. Many slowdowns turn out to be a full startup list or a nearly full drive, not a lack of memory.
